Today was the first day, in weeks, that I could open my windows without the risk of freezing my apartment. Even though we are 1/3 of the way into Spring, while some places are already enjoying hints of summer, Vancouver has been stuck in a winter loop. The trees have gone through their springtime ritual and even shed their crown of blooms. But weather wise, and temperature wise, we are not feeling a spring glow. A few odd days (like today) of weather following the calendar’s trajectory, instead of acting like it’s November, won’t do it.
When I came to Vancouver 26 years ago, one thing that delighted me was the awe inspiring nature. Little did I know it came with a price, and that price was a long winter, followed by a rainy season that never truly ended. There is a summer at the end of the cloudy tunnel, but it’s fleeting and leaves you with a wish: that you had more. Perhaps that’s just me. Perhaps it’s because I grew up in a warm climate where nature was sunbaked, not waterlogged, and learned to love it that way.
